Eggman was laying on the ground as the robot serpent broke down.
"Why..?" He said. "My only wish was to beat him. WHY?!?!?!"
<Hmhmhm...> a voice called in everyone's head. <You fool. The Lake of Wishes does not grant whims to the weak. You're hopeless...>
"Huh?" Sonic said, looking around. "Who ARE you?!"
All of a sudden an illusion appeared in front of the heroes. It was as if a screen was projecting out of thin air. In the screen was a mysterious figure in a cloak. <My name is Cyronys. I am the creator of the Lake of Wishes, and brought in into this world. Sonic... I see much potential in you. I think you will play your part just fine...>
"His part..?" Egg wondered.
<SILENCE, mortal!> Cyronys demanded at Eggman. <Sonic the Hedgehog, I just have one more thing to say to you.>
Sonic was paying close attention.
<If you meet Salem again, tell him I gave him orders not to kill you... yet...>
At that, the screen disappeared. Sonic, Tails, Rouge and Silver were left alone. They didn't realize this until they noticed Eggman was gone. They had to go on, to enter the lake and free the curse...

Something was protecting our heroes from being wet. At the bottom of the lake, there was a door. A locked door.
"It seems as if the only thing that can open this door is a Chaos Emerald..."
"What! A Chaos Emerald! But we don't have one."
"Well, you guys. I think I know someone who has it. My Emerald sense is telling me there's one nearby.
"Where?"
"Right above us..."
